Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes the bones to thin and weaken, making them more susceptible to fractures and breaks. It is a silent disease, as the symptoms appear gradually and are often ambiguous which means it often goes undiagnosed.

It is important to start taking care of your bone health early in life as there is a lot you can do to reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis. If you already suffer from osteoporosis there is still plenty that you can do to reverse some of the effects of the condition. Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis is approached in the same way: through diet and lifestyle factors, including your level of physical activity.

Q&A

What symptoms should I look out for?

Noticeable symptoms include a loss in height more than 2cm, a hump in the back or incidence of fragility fractures from something like a sneeze or a small fall.

What should I do if I think I am at risk of Osteoporosis?

It is important to visit your GP if you suspect that you are at risk of osteoporosis. Your GP will recommend tests to determine if you have or are at risk of osteoporosis. Following a visit with your GP you should consult with a dietitian for diet and lifestyle advice.

They can provide you with a meal plan including the necessary amount of calcium and vitamin D rich foods to help offset the effects of osteoporosis. Physical activity can also help in the prevention and management of osteoporosis, as it helps to improve bone density and bone strength
